This Senufo pendant from the boarderlands of Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast would have been used around the turn of the century a divining tool. Diviners existed much as doctors and councilors, using small sculptures to call upon the power of the natural world and to prescribe spiritual and medical advice. The high copper content indicates the age of the amulet and prowess of the artist.
